Family Education and Training classes on the Letter of Intent to help Special Needs Families

How to better protect your Special Needs family member

Letter of Intent Family Education and Training classes will be offered at the Lockport Public Library on June 23, 2010 and July 19, 2010 both at 7:30 pm.  Both Family Education and Training classes will be offered in the community meeting room at the back entrance to the library.  Both FET classes are free to the public.  The training will be taught by Les Robinson a special care planner. The training will be one hour long.  The classes will explain how a Letter of Intent helps protect, reduce stress and a better understanding of the special needs individual life planning.  This document helps you to reduce stress in your family life. It also helps for other people to have a better understanding of your special needs individual. The Letter of Intent does not have to be prepared by a lawyer, but is written by the family or caregiver. This will help the people caring, teaching for your child to help interpret your hopes, desires, handling medical and non medical problems for your child. By compiling as much information about your child’s  needs and your desires you will be giving present and future care providers, the knowledge and insight they will need to provide the best possible care – they will not have to waste precious time learning how to manage and care for your child.

Think for a moment about the specific instructions or guidelines you give to your child or his/her caretaker when you leave for just an evening or a weekend. Imagine if you went away and never came back. Certainly you have a picture of what you would like his or her life to look like after your death. However, the next caretaker may not have the same ideas and insight as you. We have designed this Letter of Intent to provide you the format to communicate your desires and concerns to current and future caretakers.
